Covers that make us want to hide in a cave

There are many covers of songs that can indeed be said to be better than the original. For example, Nirvana's cover of 'Man Who Sold The World'. But there are some covers that go as far as making us embarassed.

Yesterday, when typing in 'I love rock and roll' into Youtube, I accidently selected the Britney spears version. Out of mere curiosity, I watched the music video. Absolute horror ensued. Which is what inspired me to write this blog post. Signing into my yahoo home, I see that they have already done a blog post on the worst covers. But that will not stop me from doing my own. :D

So without further ado...a list of some of the worst covers. You can make your own mind up which you think is worst, they're in no particular order.

I love rock and roll-Britney Spears
Originally by: The Arrows
Excuse me, but since when did she love rock and roll?
Anyway...like in all of Britney's music videos, she is scantily clad, and there are close up shots of her body every two seconds to try and please her male fans.No. Just no. You can do that in all your other music videos Britney, but you have to respect the song in this one. Joan Jett managed to be a lot hotter in her cover of the song, without looking like a slut.
Sadly, blogger is being moody with me and won't let me upload videos. So I'll just leave some links:

Smells like Teen Spirit-TAKE THAT!?
Originally by:Nirvana (the lovely men at the top of my blog)

I'm sorry, but what were they thinking? They covered the song the year after Kurt Cobain died. Ok, maybe I'm being harsh , maybe they were just having a bit of fun. It's just one of those songs you can't really cover. Although to be honest, I think Kurt Cobain would laugh rather than be angry. At least that's what I would do.I have nothing against Take That, but just....why? Oh why?
Take That's version:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzBjatkVtzY
However, I have to admit, their version is entertaining in a hypnotic sort of way.

American Pie-Madonna
Originally by: Don McLean
I don't think Madonna should have covered it, but that's just my opinion. This song is supposed to be a recounting of 'The Day That Music Died', a 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. When Don McLean sang it, he was telling it from his perspective, so we could relate to it. He told us about himself as a paperboy, delivering the sad news in the newspapers. When Madonna sings it, I just can't relate to it somehow. She was only one year old at the time (she was born in 1958) so she obviously cannot remember it. Anyway, this one is a slight 'iffy', it sort of deserves to be on this list, it sort of doesn't. You can make up your mind about it:

Fairytale of New York-Ronan Keating and Moya Brennan
Originally by: The Pogues

Fairytale of New York is a folk rock song-so it just managed to scrape into this list of the worst rock covers. Personally, I think this is one of those Christmas songs you can never get bored of. Unless you're listening to the Ronan Keating cover. He changed the words from 'you're a cheap lousy faggot' to 'you're cheap and you're a haggard' because he didn't want to offend anyone. I don't really know who he thought he was offending, maybe he didn't want to upset his parents. Anyway, this is obviously again one of those songs you can't ever cover and  be better than the original. I wish someone had told Ronan Keating that. I don't know how he managed to drag Moya Brennan into it either. I don't actually know who she is, and I can't be bothered to research her either.

Strawberry Fields Forever-Candy Flip
Originally by: The Beatles
This is another 'iffy' one. It doesn't exactly make me want to go and hide in a cave. But the cymbals are very annoying. And it's nowhere as good as the original. Of course, no one can beat the Beatles :D

Under the bridge-All Saints
Originally by: The Red Hot Chili Peppers
It's not so much that the girls in All Saints can't sing. It's just that 'Under the Bridge' is completely about heroin addiction, and they utterly disrespected the song by removing the verse about drug use. So now it's a song about who knows what. Even The Red Hot Chili Peppers said themselves that they felt the song had now lost of of it's 'personal significance'

The Tide is High-Atomic Kitten
Originally by: The Paragons, but made famous by Blondie.

Ok. Maybe this is really stretching things a bit. But Blondie did write a lot of rock songs, so they are sort of a rock band. Maybe? Alright, no, maybe not. Nevertheless, the Atomic Kitten's version is incredibly annoying. Everything from their horrible music video, to the fact that they added a random bit called 'Get the Feeling'. To be honest, I find the Atomic Kittens annoying in general. I mean, what sort of name is Atomic Kitten? I'm a cat lover, and even I find their name annoying.

God only knows-David Bowie
Originally by:The Beach Boys
I love David Bowie, but sadly he's not too good at covering others-his style is too singular. And this song is no exception.Although it's not as bad as the other offenders on the list.

I can't get no satisfaction-Britney Spears
Originally by: The Rolling Stones
Yes, once again Mrs Spears appears. Why Britney? Why cover a timeless classic like this that you know you're going to end up ruining? You might not be able to get any satisfaction, but we can't get any satisfaction from this either. Although at least she did try. And she tried and she tried and she tried.:D

Song 2-Robbie Williams
Originally by: Blur

I happened to really like Song 2. Even though it was Blur's attempt at actually making fun of grunge bands like Nirvana, it's still one of those really catchy songs you can't get bored of. But Robbie Williams...why? What possessed you? But similar to the Take That version of Smells Like Teen Spirit, Robbie's version is strangely entertaining. You want to look away...and yet you can't.

You shook me all night long-Celine Dion and Anastacia

Walk this way-Girls Aloud and the Sugababes
Originally by: Aerosmith

The original:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b80c1KIMNxY&feature=related

Alright, maybe I'm being a bit biased here, as I adore Aerosmith but detest Girls Aloud. They're all sex appeal and annoying dance routines. Sorry. They might have some slightly catchy songs, but did they write them? No. At least we can say that they covered this song for charity...although I'm not sure I would even buy it for charity.

Absolute beginners-Carla Bruni
Originally by:David Bowie

Ok, let's get this straight Carla. Just because you're married to the president of France does not mean you can butcher whatever song you want. "I find it incredible she doesn't realise that she can't sing now, she doesn't have the right to when the country is on the verge of exploding and she is Sarkozy's wife. Can you imagine Cherie Blair or Samantha Cameron doing that?" said Jean Daniel Beauvallet from ‘Les Inrockuptibles' a French publication. Well, personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Michelle Obama cover something...

Macy Grey herself

Macy Grey's covers are all hilarious. Listen to her version of 'Walk this Way' and you'll understand what I mean. But if you really want to get a taste of her covers...this as bad as it gets:
Macy Grey's cover on Elton John's Don't Go Breaking My heart.
Watch it here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEv65FaHG40
I found myself silently cackling at a remark someone on Youtube made: "This is the worst cover ever. Hands down. Nothing else even comes close. Still funny as shit."

Mr Tambourine Man:William Shatner
Originally by:Bob Dylan

At least this is one of those covers where the singer is intentionally being funny, rather than blindly murdering the song and leaving us all embarassed.

Is it wrong that I feel slightly guilty after all this for being mean? I have to admit though, this post was pretty fun to write...
All comments are welcome, if you disagree with me on anything don't be afraid to tell me.
Let me know of any other covers you think deserved to be on this list.

  1. I think the thing is this: some people can do covers and some can't - as you have demonstrated very clearly above. To do a decent cover means presenting the song in a way that makes the listener think differently about it. Tori Amos is very good at this (try 'Enjoy the Silence' or dare I say, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'?), as is (perhaps surprisingly) Siouxsie and the Banshees ('Dear Prudence', 'Wheels On Fire'). It's a real tightrope and only those with a strong confident and individual style survive!

Just for the record my current favourite covers are No Doubt's version of Talk Talk's 'It's my Life' and The Sunday's version of the Stones' 'Wild Horses'.

  2. Hello music obsessive :D Yes,some people can can do amazing covers while others fail miserably.I agree, to make a great cover you have to present the song in a way that makes the listener think differently about it. It's also about bringing new life to a classic, and changing it enough vocally wise to make it personal but not changing it enough to make it sound like a different song.A clear powerful individual style is obviously needed, you seem to know exactly what you're talking about :D

Wow, Tori Amos's version of Smells Like Teen Spirit is simply amazing (as well as her cover of enjoy the silence), you seem to have proved me wrong. It seems that any song can be covered, it just needs a confident artist.
Like Siouxsie and the Banshees for example, I particularly like 'Dear Prudence', they brought new life to Lennon's classic.

And I'm glad you like No Doubt's version of 'It's My Life' because I'm absolutely in LOVE with their cover. And although personally I think you shouldn't always associate a song with it's music video, whenever I hear 'It's my life' I always remember Gwen Stefani playing the beautiful villain.

  3. Thank you for your very nice comment on my blog! I'm sorry to hear about your mom.

That Madonna cover makes me want to jam hot pokers into my ears. Dreadful.

I didn't know that many of these even existed, and I thank God for that. Especially Robbie Williams doing Blur. No. Just, NO.

I see you love Nirvana. I have serious issues with them, but none of them are really the band's fault. They've all pretty much been caused by the media.

  4. No, thank you for commenting back on my blog. And thanks for your sympathy, at least you can relate to it.

Yes, I have to admit some of these covers are absolutely horrific. When I heard Robbie Williams doing Song 2, I had a small laughing fit.

And don't worry, to each his own, there are some things I love about Nirvana and some I don't. To be honest you probably know a lot more about them than me, because I was born after Nirvana broke up.
Anyway, thanks for the comment again :D

  5. A nice comprehensive list up there. Lot of them were unheard for me before! The britney spears' one was LOL for me! Have you heard Behind blue eyes covered by Limpbizkit ? It's been voted as one of the worst covers of all time ! :D

My favorite ones would be: All along the watchtower by Jimi Hendrix, and Knockin on heaven's door by GnR ! I had also written a post on covers on my blog too quite a few months ago ! lol :)

  6. These are hilarious and I completely agree with what you are saying. However Nirvana is the most over rated band of all time. If Kurt Cobain hadn't died, Nirvana would have faded away. Young teenager there are so many other better rock bands out there. Paramore is a good band, you probably would also like Three Days Grace. The best rock band of all-time is Led Zeppelin. That being said Nirvana does do a great cover of the old blues song by Leadbelly, "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" Check it out:

  7. Definitely, I too think that Nirvana is quite too over-rated infact! I still do not know the reason though !

  8. Hey again bearockr! Yes, Britney Spears seems to be VERY bad at covers, she does appear twice on my list. I had not previously heard that cover you mentioned by Limpbizkit, but I agree that the Who original is a lot better. Although of course, we have to bear in mind that covering a song is the most respect you can give a band. My blog post was just going through a couple of examples of when the artist doesn't cover it in the correct manner.

And hello Craig Zhivago. I don't like Nirvana because of how much they've been in the news, I like them for their music.I wasn't even alive when they were in the news. Maybe you're right, Nirvana would have faded away, but Nirvana's music was constantly changing, if you listen to some of their earlier songs, there's a massive difference between their more recent songs.

However, Nirvana is not my favourite band in the world, although I understand what must have given you all that impression. The fact that they manage to worm their way into most of my blog posts, and the fact that they're right at the top of my blog.

But quite frankly, I just happened to like the picture at the top of my blog. I like the background. I'm probably going to change it soon, but I can't be bothered at the moment...I'm very lazy. If I had to choose my favourite band in the world, it would definitely be the Rolling Stones, considering the fact that my dad actually met them (eek!) when he was a student taxi driver in the early 80s (we live in the UK in case you didn't know).

Anyway, sorry for the long blog post, I just wanted to clear up that although I do love Nirvana and they're definitely in my top ten, they're not my favourite band by far....

  9. Hello Music is my guilty pleasure, thank you so so much for you comment!
I like you blog too, it's very interesant and I like to meet another people that like the rock too :)
I think that the problem about all this covers are the artists that make it... I mean, I don't like very much the covers in general but, for example, the creedence's cover of the Marvin Graye's song "I heard it through the grapevine" is sooooo good! But the actual covers are totally horrible and I can't stand hearing them.
I loove your blog and I'll come back here!! jajaja

  10. OMG!! the robbie williams Song 2 cover - no, no, no, no, no, a million NO!! that was horrible, i did not even finish watching it. his whoo-hoo at the beginning is atrocious!!! why?!?!?!..that was so unnecessary..my biggest concern is the fans were actually into it...but nothing is worse than the Spears cover..I am so embarrased that I actually first heard those songs by her so I thought she was the original. I slapped myself for that... But that was a long time ago, I know better now. She ruined everything! The original are so good that they didn't deserve to be covered by her.

and what? there's actually a cover of Under the Bridge? I could not imagine how the song would sound without Kiedis vocals..I won't even bother looking at it. and what?! (lol) smells like teen spirit - not gonna bother either although i'll check out tori's version.

and macy grey? huh. she can't sing. no matter what. even my music teacher says so and that says a lot since he was educated to be a musician from the Julliard School - a world renowned music school.

    and what else..hmmmm
oh yeah about Nirvana, I was pretty obsessed with them too but not so much anymore. I remember really believing that Kurt did not commit suicide. I was like one of those supporters who wanted to reopen his case. Lets see i was that 3 yrs ago. I love their music though, I truly do. but i had to admit that there are sometimes some songs that to me (my own opinion) sounds almost the same. like, sometimes i could not tell the difference. but the music and sound they contributed is too much that i don't even care about that anymore. i remember when Polly was stuck in my head for months, its just there in my mind playing.

and i totally love their unplugged show in NYC, i mean i wasn't there cuz i was too young at the time but i saw the videos and you can really say that its one of their best...and when i saw it for the first time it was kind of emotional cuz i could not believe that Kurt was really dead. for me, he's one of those 'long gone but not forgotten' person. i think somehow in the back of my head i still believe he did not commit suicide cuz man i really do believe that he loves music so much it would be selfish for him to take himself from the world and stop creating music, but again thats just me.

what else, great post by the way. pretty interesting topic. now why didn't i think of this for my blog? lol

i just wana say that i'm still elated that you like same bands as i do. for me the greatest band ever is queen. then i've proven lately how really awesome led zeppelin is. and although i think the beatles are overrated, who wouldnt like them. i've been listening to them since i was kid cuz my mom had tons of cassettes of them. the beatles and the rolling stones are the same level for me. then tom petty and the heartbreakers, boston, pssfft it wouldnt fit here.. all in all, i love the music that existed even before i was born!!! my blog is proof enough.

    peace.
i apologize for the long, droning comment =)

  13. Sorry everyone....this is going to be a very LONG blog post...
First, hello MusicToLive, thanks for commenting back :D Yes, it is a lot to do with the musician themselves, and how strong an artist they are. It's lovely meeting other people who like rock music, which is exactly why I made a music blog. I go to an all girls school, and all they can talk about is Justin Bieber and X factor (the UK version of American Idol). As you can imagine, it is horrible not having anyone with similar interests.
And to E.T's gravity, yes the song 2 was absolutely horrific, wasn't it? And of COURSE, the fans were into it, most of them were insane middle aged women who would faint if Robbie Williams breathed on them. They would have screamed in appreciation had he started to sing 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'.

Sorry, fuck blogger, (excuse me) they won't let me upload my comment as apparently it's TOO LONG? IS IT NOW BLOGGER?! YOU DO REALISE YOU ARE RESTRICTING MY FREEDOM OF SPEECH HERE ?
Anyway, this blog post will have to be in two parts.

    ReplyDelete
  14. PART TWO, HEY, DO YOU LIKE THAT BLOGGER?
    Anyway...where was I?

Don't worry about thinking that Britney Spears was the original artist, I'm guessing you're quite young, am I correct? Not as young as me of course, but you're a student, and you sound young. So please, don't worry, here's a little secret : I was seven when Britney Spears released I love rock and roll, and at the time I, like most little girls, adored Britney Spears (oh my goodness, this is so embarrassing to admit ...). So yeah. I thought it was by her at the time. Now, eight years later, I have completely forgotten about the Britney Spears cover (see how quickly everyone forgets the manufactured music?) and I only remembered it when looking for the Joan Jett version on Youtube. We weren't born at the time the originals were released, so how were we to know?

Yeah, there's no point looking at the Take That version of Smells Like Teen Spirit, or the All Saints cover of under the bridge. You'll probably have nightmares...

Yes, I absolutely ADORED the Nirvana's unplugged show in NYC, Where did you sleep last night was stuck in my head for ages after I heard it. I'm not one of those crazy fans who don't think he committed suicide, I think it's very likely he did. He was quite a messed up person, and he took a lot of drugs.

And thank you! To be honest, I got a lot of these songs from Yahoo's blog post of the worst cover versions, although I still had to do a lot of research to add some of my own (it took me hours to do this post). I honestly wouldn't mind if you decided to do a post on the worst covers too. It would be interesting to see your ideas. The best bloggers steal after all...

And yes, I absolutely adore having people online here who have the same taste in music as me. Honestly, today I went shopping with my friends and bought a Rolling Stones shirt. You should have seen their faces. "Um...oh...that looks um...nice. Why do you want to waste ten pounds on a t shirt with a tongue on it?"
I have a feeling I might explode soon if I don't meet someone who's not virtual who hasn't been brainwashed by the media!

Queen is amazing. End of story. Freddie Mercury was the world's best frontman (sorry Mick Jagger. I've changed my mind. But you'll always have a special place in my heart). Even Lady What's her name Gaga admitted that. You know, she named herself after the Queen song "Radio Gaga". And she's supposed to be original. Oops, sorry, I'm being mean again. :D Anyway, I love Led Zeppelin, they would definitely be in my top ten favourite bands. And yes, the Beatles are very overrated, but you have to admit, their music is amazing. The main reason the Beatles are so overrated is because they had they had the media behind them.
Anyway...I would write more, but I'm tired. It's late in the UK.
But thank you so very much for your comment. Please don't apologize, I can't tell you how much I love getting comments, and the longer they are the better. The fact that your comment is long shows that you read through my blog post and my comments in depth, and actually took the time to write down how you felt about things. Don't worry about blogger acting up, it always does.
Guess it's time to wrap up...before blogger starts getting moody with me again.
    Peace. xxx

  15. Ok. I just realised that maybe it wasn't blogger's fault. Maybe my post was just the TINIEST bit too long. I got slightly carried away.

  17. Rolling Stones are at least 100 times better than Nirvana.

  18. Thanks guys.
This doesn't mean that I don't like Nirvana. There's still a picture of Kurt Cobain on my blog. I just wanted people to stop jumping to conclusions about who my favourite band was.

  19. hey music is my guilty pleasure (got a nick? lol), you know what I just had a brainstorm yesterday that maybe I should do a post that this time talks about cover songs that are actually better than the original or close to the original. but then again, i don't think i'll be the first one to do it. i'm sure there's already tons of posts about that on the web. so i scrapped that thought out, but maybe i will do it. lol

i had a laughing fit when you mentioned that about robbie williams breathing on these middle aged women's ears and singing 'twinkle twinkle'..that makes me want to make a point, doesn't it just want to make you shout to the masses that 'why do they effin care more now about the looks than the real talent of creativity and originality?' i just want to hurt someone everytime they say when this artist is 'singing' even when they arent. and F her! that twig with weird clothes and hair and songs that makes me hurl, i loathe her for using Queen's catalogue and incorporating herself with it. I don't even wana say her so called name. and i believe her "the fame" effin album is also based on Queen's The Game. you call that originality? i wana shake her and tell her to get real!! i'm being violent and mean but its true! i'm not gonna excuse myself for it...

lol so im not the only one, about the spears thing..those were the dark days!! hahahaha

QUEEN. end of story. Queen, Queen, Queen. there can only be one Freddie Mercury. I love them all. I love Led Zeppelin, I love the Beatles. they are the one's who created the music that when you listen to it you know they put their emotions in it and that they really had an inspiration. i can't get over Led's "Bron-Yr-Aur" and "In The Light". Queen's "Nevermore". The Beatle's "In My Life". you can feel it. masterpieces, need I say more.

blogger did not let me post comments in 2 days, my blogger is a stuck-up! lol

ooh, before i wrap it up. i keep interchanging topics. did you hear about that news about Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic playing together again since Nirvana broke up in for Foo's new album? with Butch Vig the producer of Nevermind? fuckin cool! wait, are you a fan of Foo Fighters? haha

  23. i just had another thought, Kurt is pretty messed up, now that i had time to think about it, he's actually capable of doing it. he was pretty depressed too and he has history of hurting himself. well still, i hope he's in a better place.

  24. Hello again E.T's Gravity :D
Wow, you actually attempted to read the two massive blog posts I wrote in reply!
Anyway, yeah, I was actually thinking of doing a post about covers that are better than the original, but I decided that mocking others would be more fun :) I think you should post whatever you want, even if there are loads of other posts on the same topic.

Yes, so much is based on looks nowadays. Think about what all theses singers would be without the media though. If the newspapers and magazines weren't stuffed full of pictures of Lady Youknow, most people wouldn't even know her. Oooh, look at this outfit, look at this outfit.

And yes, there are some songs that are such incredible masterpieces you could listen to them forever, and that is what makes the best music live on. Wouldn't it be lovely, to write a song, and have people still singing it decades after you die?

Oh, and after reading your blog I've been updated on the whole Nirvana (sort of) reunion. And I think it's wonderful! Dave and Krist are both amazing musicians, and it's lovely to see them playing together after all this time. And Butch Vig adding his own little touch to the Foo Fighter's music will be have a very exciting and interesting outcome. And yes, I do like the Foo Fighters, but I won't lie and say I'm a hardcore fan who's bought all of their albums and knows all the lyrics. But that's mainly to do with the fact that I haven't had a chance too yet, seeing as there are so many good bands out there that I a just discovering. But I'll get back to the Foo Fighters one day, though right now I'll stick to listening to their music on youtube.
And R.I.P. Kurt. However you died, I hopw you're in a good place now. But I still like your music, even though everyone claims you're overrated :D
Anyway, I need to STOP waffling, otherwise I get out of CONTROL and start writing essays as comments, like I did before.

  25. it's always fun when we know we're mocking those people who deserved to be mocked and they should know better because the made the decision to cover a song they know they shouldn't have.

I serioiusly believe that the media will one day kill us all. Maybe not literally kill us but kill us mentally.

Masterpieces, like you said about Paint It Black. I love that you know, I wonder if these artist have any idea when they created their particular songs that one day those songs would actually the reason that they would become immortal even when they really are gone.

Foo Fighters are actually one of those bands that helped me. Haha, and no worries I don't have their albums physically either. I got them on my iPod but I think the way I got is illegal so I won't mention it here. LOL Yeah, stick with youtube first. And its actually worth seeing the vids cause their vids are actually hilarious. Its both good music at the same time make you laugh till the end of the video. But I do recommend not today but yeah one day to really get the albums. They have a wide variety of sounds too. It's nice for our well-being...

Alright, I think I've typed enough. Lol I've been wasting your comment spaces. we've been writing essays lately. it just really goes to show that when you find someone that shares your interest its hard sometimes to shut the hell up lol.. i appreciate you replying to all my comments.

    peace

  26. To reply...or not to reply...that has been the question that has been bugging since I first read your last comment. Maybe 23 comments on one blog is enough. Or maybe not.
Well, I'll just say three things:
1.OH MY GOODNESS, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I THOUGHT!The media will kill us all one day. They have such immense power over us all.
    2. The Foo Fighters are a great band and I will eventually save up enough money to buy an album, but right now I need to get other stuff like a capo for my guitar (instead of using one made of a pencil and elastic bands)
    3. Yes, I really do feel happy that I've met someone who shares the same sort of music taste as me and who's sort of in the same age group as me. You're right, that's probably why we've been writing essays as comments. And please, thank you for writing the comments, I have nothing better to do than answer them.
    :D
